Ladies that FOSS

First time I heard about Ladies that FOSS was at FOSDEM 2016. I was helping with Wikimedia Infobooth when i meet Julia and Lucie, 2 of the organizers of the event. After a quick chat with Julia  we realized that both of us were working on the gender gap issues, so she introduced me with Ladies that FOSS project that they were planning to host on October 2016.

This project aimed primarily at women who want to join a Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) project but don’t know where to start.

Only 11% of people in FOSS are women or identify as nonbinary, agender or genderfluid.

“Ladies that FOSS” emphatically welcomes people of all gender identities and aims to give women and gender minorities a special platform to develop their skills.

WMDE’s software development department, believe that this number should be higher, and that there are plenty of FOSS projects looking for women coders. There are plenty of women coders who are looking to get involved and code FOSS. Ladies that FOSS wants also to help bring those two together. They match FOSS projects with women interested in FOSS.

33C3: Works for me

After 2 years of trying to participate in CCC, I finally made it, at the 33rd edition! This year everything started when my friend from FSFE, Erik, invited me to have a talk about Wikidata at the FSFE assembly happening there. So this was my chance to finally make it to CCC. And with my friend Jan,  we applied for another talk on gender diversity in free software.

Finished my slides, both talks accepted

Financial support request at Wikimedia Foundation: accepted

Got the ticket

..and BOOM, 33C3 here i come!

BotAcademy 2015 in Stockholm

For those who know me, they know how much I love snow. In the first moment when Wikimedia Sverige told me I won to participate at Botacademy I thought: Oh! Sweden, north, snow :).

While waiting for the snow to start falling outside I was learning about python at Wikimedia Sverige offices, which btw were really nice and warm.

Botacademy was a short intensive training about bots, how to create and run it on Wikimedia projects and tools that help to start with it. It was organized by Wikimedia Sverige for the second time this year.

Day 1 started with the introduction of the 6 participants and their plans on their local Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Andre (GLAM developer, Wikimedia Sverige)  introduced us to the program and how to get started with bots.

Wikimedia CEE meeting 2015, Estonia

Annual meeting of Wikimedians from Central and Eastern Europe  this year was held in Estonia.  It was the fourth in a series of such conferences. Wikimedia CEE meeting 2015 was attended by 67 people from almost all countries of the region and representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation.

This year, participants were deployed in houses and rooms in a resort in Voore, a small town near Tartu, away from the temptations of everyday life, which was the intention to increase the focus on the conference itself. The sessions were held in the conference building near the accommodation and the program was divided into two parallel tracks.

During the Wikimedia Conference 2015 meetup, the program was concentrate on following topics:

  1. sharing learning from different (successful and unsuccessful) practices in the region,
  2. practical workshops on Wikidata and on tools,
  3. sharing projects that can be completed with relatively little financial input,
  4. collaborative work on future cross-community collaboration projects (like CEE Spring 2015 was created during CEE meeting 2014.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2015

Open Tech Summit/Gender Gap Wikipedia

After more than 15 programming and developing speeches before my talk, here its me, a programmer who speaks about not programming stuff, but Wikipedia Diversity and Gender Gap.

The first goal: To break my record. To have more than 5 girls participating at my talk. ✔
I had 11 girls participating at my talk.

Second goal: To think in Albanian and speak in English without awkward silence in between(since this was the first time that i had a talk about gender gap in English) ✔
I repeated so many times my talk, that I was thinking and speaking in English even after i was back in Tirana.

Wikimedia CEE Meeting in Kiev!

Wikimedia CEE Meeting is a meeting of the Wikimedians of Central and Eastern Europe.

Wikipedia Weekend 2014

Wikipedia Weekend, is probably  the biggest community event in Albania about Wikipedia and wiki related projects.  It gathered enthusiasts of the free software and open source community, academics and wikienthusiasts, with the main goal of growing the community further and doing same thing we do every night: try to take over the world!

I am grateful to all those who helped to make this happened. And as part of the organizational team I am so proud with the result 🙂 Looking forward for more wiki-projects!
